Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Divas in India is celebrated every year to pay tribute to our freedom fighters. Shaheed Divas is celebrated every year on 23rd March and 30th January in order to mark the remembrance of the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, Shivaram Rajguru and Mahatma Gandhi respectively in India. Shaheed Divas is the saddest day in India’s history of freedom struggle.

Set 1

1) Martyr’s Day is observed annually on 30th January to mourn the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

2) Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in the evening of 30th January 1948 at Birla House, New Delhi.

3) President and Prime Minister paid homage to the father of the nation at Raj Ghat in New Delhi.

4) In 2020, for the first time, the CDS (Chief of Defence Staff) also paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

5) Many states declared, January 30 as dry day, to show their respect towards Mahatma Gandhi.

6) People of India observe a two-minute silence in the honour of Bapu (Mahatma Gandhi).

7) On the martyr’s day, other freedom fighters are also remembered and honoured.

8) India celebrated the Martyr’s Day as Anti-Leprosy Day in 2020 to foster Bapu’s commitment for ending leprosy.

9)  The Assam Rifles has constructed a War Memorial for 357 martyrs at Mokokchung in Nagaland.

1) The Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on 30th January is observed as Martyr’s Day.

2) It is a day to remember and honour the martyrs of the motherland who lost their life saving her freedom and integrity.

3) The nation observes a two minutes silence at 11:00 AM on Martyr’s Day in the honour of Mahatma Gandhi and other martyr’s.

4) Prayers and bhajans are sung at gatherings to commemorate and remember the martyrs.

5) Apart from 30th January, India has four other dates declared as Marty’s Day – 23rd March, 21st October, 17th November and 19th November.

6) 23rd March is observed as the Death Anniversary of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru.

7) 21st October is a nationwide observance by the Police Department as the Police Martyr’s Day.

8) 17th November is observed in the state of Odisha as the Death Anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai, the “Lion of Punjab”.

9) 19th November is observed in the Jhansi region on the birth anniversary of Rani Lakshmibai and to honour the martyrs of the Revolt of 1857.

10) Martyr’s Days are also called Sarvodaya Day or Saheed Diwas.

Youths of India should never forget the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters. Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev were hanged by the British government when they were very young.
