What is Flag Code of India
The Flag Code of India is a collection of laws that specify how the Indian Flag should be used correctly. As per the code, the Government of India has detailed guidelines for the size, shape, and color of the National Flag, as well as how to properly fly it. It was 26 January 2002 when the Flag Code of India was established.
It is a combination of all the previously existing laws and conventions. The Indian Flag Code is not a command but a set of rules. The Flag Code of India plays a very important role in maintaining respect for the flag and the nation.

Need of the Flag Code

There was a time when the display of the national flag was governed by the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1949 (No.12 of 1949) and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 (No. 69 of 1971).
Later, it was substituted by the “Flag Code of India 2002”. In order to provide guidance and benefit to all concerned, the Flag Code of India, 2002, has been drafted as an attempt to bring together all such laws, conventions, practices, and instructions in one place.

Parts of the Flag Code
There are three parts to the Flag Code of India, which was published in 2002. A general description of the national flag is contained in Part I of the code. In accordance with this code, cotton, wool, and silk khadi bunting should be used to make the Indian National Flag.
The National Flag shall be a tricolor panel consisting of three rectangular panels of equal widths. Kesari (saffron) should be the color of the top panel followed by white and green. Having 24 equally spaced spokes, the Ashoka Chakra shall be navy blue in color.
The second part of the code is dedicated to the display of the national flag by members of the public, staff, students, and teachers of educational establishments. The Part III of the code relates to the display of the national flag by the central government and the state governments, as well as their agencies and organizations.

Modifications to the Flag Code
The center has made some changes to the Flag Code of India 2002 as per the requirements. Till now, it was modified twice.
Amendment on 30 December 2021
According to the Flag Code, the national flags should only be hand-woven. The material of the flag should only be cotton, silk, or khadi. A notification was issued by the government last year amending paragraph 1.2 of Part I of the flag code. On 30 December 2021, the Flag Code was modified, allowing polyester and machine-made flags.
Amendment on 20 July 2022
People are encouraged to fly the flag from August 13 to August 15 as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The Ministry of Home Affairs has reviewed the Flag Code of India 2002, which governs the use of the Indian flag.
There has been a change to clause XI of paragraph 2.2 of the Flag Code, according to the ministry. It is now possible for the national flag to fly through the night if it is raised by a member of the public and flown in the open. The modification was made on 20 July 2022. Earlier the flag can only be flown from sunrise to sunset.

According to the Flag Code, in any case, the tricolor should not be used for commercial purposes, and it should not be used to salute any person or thing in any way. It is strongly recommended that the tricolor be placed in a prominent position to give it a sense of pride. There should always be a proper ceremony for hoisting and lowering the Indian flag and it must always be done swiftly. Whenever there is a celebration, the Indian flag should not be used for decoration purposes.
It is also mandatory that whenever a flag is being used as an official symbol, it must comply with the specifications laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards and must bear the special mark that they have provided.
According to the code, during a state funeral or a situation in which there is a death of a head of state, flags may be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect for the deceased. If such an event takes place on a day of national significance, then the national flag must be flown at half-mast only in those buildings where the body of the deceased is exhibited. The National Flag of India has to be discarded respectfully when it is no longer suitable for display in order to maintain the dignity of the flag and make sure that it is not defaced.
