10 Lines on Jayaprakash Narayan

Jayaprakash Narayan or JP was a fighter of Indian freedom struggle. He was a social reformer and a social and political activist. Born in a small and a simple family in Bihar, JP became a most prominent figure in Indian freedom struggle as he actively participated in Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement and became as one of the heroes of Quit India movement.

JP was a man of ideologies and principles which he never compromised. He is still popularly known as Loknayak which means the leader of the people. JP also started his fight against Indira Gandhi led government over the declaration of emergency.

Set 1

1) Jayaprakash Narayan was a freedom fighter, social activist and a political leader.

2) He was born on 11th October 1902 in Chhapra district of Bihar.

3) Jayaprakash studied in the universities of US where he became a Marxist.

4) In 1932, he actively participated in Civil Disobedience Movement and was jailed.

5) After release, he took part in forming the Congress Socialist Party.

6) Jayaprakash Narayan was actively involved in ‘Bhoodan Movement’ in 1954.

7) In 1974, he demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

8) After disqualification, Indira Gandhi imposed National Emergency on 25th June 1975.

9) Jayaprakash Narayan started mass agitation and struggle against imposed emergency.

10) He died on 8th October 1979 in Patna due to critical heart ailments.

1) Jayaprakash Narayan or ‘JP’ was an Indian freedom fighter, social reformer, political leader and an activist popularly known as “Loknayak” meaning people’s leader.

2) He is also known as “Hero of the Quit India Movement” and for his opposition against Indira Gandhi during emergency.

3) JP was born in the ‘Sitabdiara’ village in Saran district of Bihar in a family of ‘Harsu Dayal’ as father and ‘Phul Rani Devi’ as his mother.

4) He was admitted to Collegiate School at Patna and also went to United States for higher studies.

5) In October 1920, JP married ‘Prabhavati Devi’ who herself was a freedom fighter and during JP’s education she stayed in Gandhiji’s ashram in Sabarmati.

6) When JP returned to India in 1929, he joined Indian National Congress and started participating in Indian freedom struggle with Mahatma Gandhi.

7) In 1932, while participating in Civil Disobedience movement against British rule, JP was arrested by the Britishers.

8) JP started a struggle against Indira Gandhi when Allahabad High Court disqualified her candidature of Prime Minister for violating electoral norms.

9) Indira Gandhi declared National Emergency on 25th June 1975 and as a result JP started mass movement and struggle which is known as “Sampoorna Kranti”.

10) Jayaprakash Narayan received the highly prestigious award “Baharat Ratna” posthumously in 1999 and he also received Magsaysay award in 1965.

1) Jayaprakash Narayan was a revolutionary who contributed significantly in the freedom struggle before the independence of the country and in politics after independence.

2) Apart from this, it is because of his work done for the common man’s interests and justice that he is called as Lok Nayak.

3) From childhood, Jayaprakash was greatly influenced by the bravery of the kings and emperors of India, and he grew up reading their stories.

4) Jayaprakash Narayan was a very talented student; he showed his talent in writing during school days.

5) He wrote an essay on “The Current State of Hindi in Bihar “, which received much encouragement and praise by the people.

6) Jayaprakash left the country for higher education and reached California on 8th October 1922.

7)  Jayaprakash did a variety of jobs to finance his education in the United States, and these experiences made him aware of the problems facing the working class.

8) In Berkeley, he also worked in grape harvesting, jam packers, waiters, salesmen and washing dishes.

9) JP also read the books of Indian scholar and communist M.N. Roy; he also studied the works of Lenin and Trotsky.

10) He was greatly influenced by Karl Marx’s Theory of capitalism.

Set 4

1) Jayaprakash Narayan returned to India in 1929, and after returning, he joined the Indian National Congress at the behest of Jawaharlal Nehru.

2) He also contributed to the non-cooperation movement against the British government, and due to this he had to go to jail in 1932.

3) In jail, he met Ram Manohar Lohia, Meenu Masani, Achyut Patwardhan, Ashok Mehta, Yusuf Desai and many other nationalist leaders.

4) Mahatma Gandhi started the Quit India Movement in 1942, in which Jayaprakash Narayan participated with great enthusiasm.

5) When India got independence in 1947, JP along with some other socialists left the Congress party in 1948 for reasons.

6) Jayaprakash Narayan, Acharya Narendra Dev and Basawon Singh joined the Congress Socialist Party which later became the Prajya Socialist Party.

7) In 1974, he led the students’ movement in Bihar and called for a peaceful complete revolution.

8) On 5th January 1975, Jayaprakash Narayan called for a complete revolution, and organized a historic rally at Gandhi Maidan in Patna.

9) In 1999, he was awarded the highest Bharat Ratna of India for his contribution for the society.

10) He died on 8th October 1979 in Patna, Bihar, 3 days before his 77th birthday due to renal failure.


Jayaprakash Narayan was such a great leader of India who participated actively in Indian freedom struggle, both in Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement and in fact became a hero of Quit India Movement. After independence, he never sat quiet and he always thought about the prosperity, growth and development of India. When Indira Gandhi declared National Emergency, no one other than him was there to raise voice against her decision.
