Future Continuous Tense is used to express the future actions which will continue for some time. Such sentences use the base form of the verb i.e. present participle or ing form.

Go through the following example sentences –

Note- ‘Shall’ can be used in place of ‘will’ with ‘I’ and ‘we’

  • I will/shall be going to Bangalore tomorrow.
  • He will be writing the letter.
  • She will be singing in the concert.
  • They will be buying a new car during the festival.

  • They will be going to New York next year.
  • I will/shall be visiting my parents tomorrow.
  • It will be travelling via Bhopal.
  • She will be calling you soon.
  • Employees will be requesting a raise in the meeting.

All the above sentences talk about the future events and are expressed in present form i.e. by using the present participle form of the verb.

Examples of Negative Future Continuous Tense-

  • I shall/will not be going to Bangalore tomorrow.
  • He will not be writing the letter.
  • She will not be singing in the concert.
  • They will not be buying a new car during the festival.
  • We will/shall not be coming to your house next month.

The above sentences are negative transformations of the affirmative sentences written above them.

  • Will they be going to New York next year?
  • Will/Shall I be visiting my parents tomorrow?
  • Will it be travelling via Bhopal?
  • Will she be calling you soon?
  • Will the employees be requesting a raise in meeting?

Below we will go through in details of all the three sentence forms of Future Continuous Tense with examples, Structure/Formula and exercises.

a) Positive Sentences

Structure/Formula for Positive Sentences in Future Continuous Tense

The Structure/Formula for Positive sentences in Future Continuous Tense is-

  • (Subject + Auxiliary verb + Main Verb + Object)
  • (Subject + will be/shall be + Present Participle + Object)

Rules for Positive Sentences in Future Continuous Tense

‘Shall be’ may be used instead of ‘will be’ when the subject is ‘I’ or ‘we’. Though, even the use of ‘will be’ is perfectly all right. ‘Shall be’ resembles a more formal conversation. Present Participle form of verb is used i.e. the base form +ing or the ‘ing’ form like- walking, talking, writing, singing etc. Below given are few examples of ‘Positive Future Continuous Tense’ sentences-

  • I will be going to school tomorrow.
  • She will be changing her house soon.
  • She will be distributing blankets to the poor.
  • They will be coming to office from next week.
  • Tomorrow by this time you will be requesting for a tea break.
  • He will be travelling to Miami with family.
  • By this time you will be writing exam on Friday.
  • We shall be going on a long drive this weekend.
  • The children will be going early to school tomorrow.
  • We will be travelling by this time after three days.

The above sentences are affirmative describing future events.

Interesting to note that the Positive sentences may be converted directly into interrogative sentences by simply inter-changing the subject (I, he, she, we etc) with ‘will’ like shown in the examples below (given only for understanding and the Interrogative sentences will be covered separately)-

  • Will/Shall I be going to school tomorrow?
  • Will she be changing her house soon?
  • Will she be distributing blankets to the poor?
  • Will they be coming to office from next week?
  • Tomorrow by his time; will you be requesting for a tea break?
  • Will he be travelling to Miami with family?
  • By this time; will you be writing exam on Friday?
  • Shall we be going on a long drive this weekend?
  • Will the children be going early to school tomorrow?
  • Will we be travelling by this time after three days?

b) Negative Sentences

Structure/Formula for Negative Sentences in Future Continuous Tense Sentences

Structure/Formula for ‘Negative Future Continuous Tense’ sentences is –

  • (Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb + Object)
  • (Subject + ‘will/shall not be’ + Present Participle + Object)

Rules for Negative Sentences in Future Continuous Tense Sentences

The only exception of Negative Sentences from Positive sentences is that the latter use ‘will not be’ as auxiliary verb instead of ‘will be’. The main verb form remains the same that is Present Participle form. Below given are some examples of ‘Negative Future Continuous’ sentences-

  • I will not be travelling by road.
  • She will not be singing in the competition this time.
  • He will not be eating dinner alone.
  • Parents informed that they will not be sending their kids in rain.
  • We will not be waiting for you.
  • I will not be doing the dishes.
  • He will not be changing college.
  • Teachers will not be compromising their study time.
  • Animals will not be shifting to new area.
  • They will not be sailing in high tide.

The above sentences negate their positive forms i.e. I will be travelling by road etc; and take the form of the ‘Negative Sentences’ in Future Continuous Tense.

c) Negative – Interrogative Sentences

There are two more interesting changes that can be done to the above Negative sentences; without changing the Future Continuous Tense but by transforming them into Negative-Interrogative sentences. The methods are described below.

1) By Adding Question Words- ‘Why’ and ‘How’ or ‘When’.

Consider the same examples given above for Negative sentences. Prefix the sentences with suitable Question words like- ‘Why’ and ‘How’; as given below-

  • Why I will not be travelling by road?

Or

  • Why will I not be travelling by road?
  • Why she will not be singing in the competition this time?

Or

  • Why will she not be singing in the competition this time?
  • How he will not be eating dinner alone?

Or

  • How will he not be eating dinner alone?
  • Why we will not be waiting for you?
  • How he will not be changing college?
  • Why the teachers will not be compromising their study time?
  • Why the animals will not be shifting to new area?
  • Why they will not be sailing in high tide?
  • Why will she not be calling him?

Or

  • Why she will not be calling him?
  • When he will not be requesting for a raise?

Or

  • When will he not be requesting for a raise?
  • When will the birds not be flying over the ocean?

Or

  • When the birds will not be flying over the ocean?
  • When will he not be talking?

Or

  • When he will not be talking?

The sentences are Negative which are induced with interrogation by inserting Question words in the beginning; thereby, making the sentences ‘Negative + Interrogative’ expressed in Future Continuous form.

2) By Interchanging the Places of Subject with the Auxiliary Verbs- will/shall.

Negative sentences written in Future Continuous form can be easily transformed into Negative-Interrogative sentences by inter-changing the subject with ‘will’. For example consider the below negative sentences and their Negative-Interrogative transformations written below them-

  • I will not be travelling by road. (Negative)
  • Will I not be travelling by road? (Negative – Interrogative)
  • He will not be eating dinner alone. (Negative)
  • Will he not be eating dinner alone? ( Negative – Interrogative)
  • We shall not be waiting for you. (Negative)
  • Shall we not be waiting for you? (Negative – Interrogative)
  • I shall not be doing the dishes. (Negative)
  • Shall I not be doing the dishes? ( Negative- Interrogative)
  • They will not be sailing in high tide. (Negative)
  • Will they not be sailing in high tide? (Negative – Interrogative)

Practice forming many negative sentences and transforming them into Negative Interrogative sentences by using the above methods.
