Future Perfect Tense

Definition and Examples

Future Perfect Tense is used to express the future events supposedly assumed by the speaker to be completed or happened in the future. The verb form used is not ‘base form’ or ‘Present Participle’ as in ‘Future Simple’ or’ Future Progressive Tense’ respectively; but, rather ‘Past Participle’ form of the main verb is used for Future Perfect Tense sentences which gives the activity a sense of completion. For example – completed, rejected, called, fallen, played finished etc.

Go through the following example sentences-

  • I will have received the letter by Tuesday.
  • They will have gone to Chennai by day after tomorrow.
  • He will have completed his assignment by then.
  • We will have gone for the gathering.
  • It will have done a full circle by the time anyone even notices.
  • They will have flown to meet the minister.
  • The principal will have rejected the application.
  • I will have left before you arrive.
  • The authorities will have dealt with the miscreants.
  • She will have called you by 5:00 in the evening.

Future Perfect Tense sentences may also be Negative and Interrogative as shown below.

Negative Future Perfect Tense Sentences:

  • I will not have received the letter by Tuesday.
  • They will not have gone to Chennai by day after tomorrow.
  • He will not have completed his assignment by then.
  • We will not have gone for the gathering.
  • It will not have done a full circle by the time anyone even notices.

Interrogative Future Perfect Tense sentences:

  • Will they have flown to meet the minister?
  • Will the principal have rejected the application?
  • Will I have left before you arrive?
  • Will the authorities have dealt with the miscreants?
  • Will she have called you by 5:00 in the evening?

Getting a basic idea of Future Perfect Tense we will go through all the three forms in details in the following exercises-

a) Positive Sentences

Structure/Formula for Positive Future Perfect Tense Sentences

The Structure/Formula for ‘Positive Future Perfect Tense’ sentences is –

  • (Subject + Auxiliary verb + Main Verb + Object)
  • (Subject + ‘will have’ + Past Participle + Object)

Rules for Positive Future Perfect Tense Sentences

Rules for forming Positive Future Perfect Tense sentences are simple-

1) Use the auxiliary verb ‘will have’ between the subject and main verb, and

2) Use the past participle form of the main verb.

Below given are some examples of ‘Positive-Future Perfect Tense’ sentences-

  • By the time you look for me, I will have gone.
  • She will have driven thousand miles in a year by next month.
  • They will have appeared before the jury.
  • He will have gone for the meeting.
  • The ship will have sailed through all the coast lines in couple of months from now.
  • I will have received the courier by tonight.
  • He will have decided on the issue when you call him.
  • It will have deleted the files automatically.
  • She will have described the incident before you can speak.
  • Before he gets ready for office, she will have prepared the lunch.

Now, carefully go through the following sentences-

Above sentences are interrogative formed by simply inter-changing the places of ‘Subject’ with auxiliary verb ‘will’. It is presented here just for your understanding and we will deal with interrogative sentences in later exercises.

b) Negative Sentences

Structure/Formula for Negative Future Perfect Tense Sentences

Structure/Formula for ‘Negative Future Perfect Tense’ Sentences is-

  • (Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb + Object)
  • (Subject + ‘will not have’ + Past Participle + Object)

Rules for Negative Future Perfect Tense Sentences

Rules for forming Negative Future Perfect Tense sentences are simple and like positive sentences with the only exception that the auxiliary verb used is ‘will not have’. Past Participle form of the main verb is used for Negative sentences.

Below given are some examples of ‘Negative Future Perfect Tense’ sentences-

  • I will not have returned from the office.
  • He will not have received the bonus by tomorrow.
  • They will not have given their approval.
  • She will not have gone to her home early tomorrow.
  • It will not have completed 10 years till the weekend.
  • The kids will not have played.
  • She will not have danced for 3 years.
  • They will not have collected the fee by tomorrow.
  • She will not have studied for the exams.

The above Negative sentences can be also written in the form as below (Both the methods are grammatically correct and convey the same message)-

  • I will have not returned from the office.
  • He will have not received the bonus by tomorrow.
  • They will have not given their approval.
  • The kids will have not played.
  • She will have not studied for the exams.

c) Negative – Interrogative Sentences

There are two methods by which a negative sentence can be converted into a combination of negative and interrogative sentences as described below-

1) By Adding Question Words- Why, How, When.

For the ease of understanding we will take the above negative sentence examples and prefix them with question words as given below-

  • Why I will have not returned from the office?
  • Why they will have not given their approval?
  • How the kids will have not played?
  • Why she will have not studied for the exams?
  • When she will have not gone early to home?

The above sentences are negative sentences and are also made interrogative by adding question words in the sentences.

2) By Inter-Changing ‘Subject’ with ‘Will’

Negative sentences may be transformed into Negative–Interrogative sentences by simply exchanging the places of the ‘Subject’ and auxiliary verb ‘will’ as shown below. (Considering the same examples given above)

  • Will I have not returned from the office?
  • Will they have not given their approval?
  • Will the kids have not played?
  • Will she have not studied for the exams?
  • Will she have not gone early to home?
