Good Morning everyone! Respected Director Madam, Principal Madam, teachers, and dear students, I am Shakti Rathore of class 7 A. Today, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Smt. Indira Gandhi, I would like to say few words about her. I’d also like to ask you all to please forgive me for any mistakes I might make during this speech.
Indira Gandhi or Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi, the true example of women empowerment was born in Allahabad on November 19, 1917. She was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family to Jawaharlal Nehru. Indira Gandhi was not only a strong leader, but she was also a strong speaker. Indira Gandhi’s political career began when she was very young. When her father was the first Prime Minister of India in the 1950s, she worked as his father’s personal assistant. After Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri death, Indira Gandhi became more eminent and was selected as prime minister of India in 1966. She also served as the head of the Indian National Congress.
Under her regime, she faced many ups and downs but she overcame every situation with great courage. It was her bravery that earned her the title of the “Iron Lady of India”. On October 31, 1984, two of her bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, killed her by shooting her with their service weapons. We have lost this gem from the world but she will always be in our hearts.

A warm welcome and good morning to everyone present over here. Respected Principal sir, teachers, and my dear school fellows. I’m Gaurav Sharma from class 10. First of all, I would like to say thank you for having me here. We all are here to celebrate the birth anniversary of the Iron Lady of India. Yes, none other than our third Prime Minister, Shri Indira Gandhi.
Indira Gandhi, daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 19 November 1917 in Uttar Pradesh. She gained education from different places including Shanti Niketan and Oxford. She was married to Feroze Gandhi and had two sons, Sanjay and Rajeev Gandhi. In 1966, she was selected as the third prime minister of India due to the untimely death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Indira Gandhi held the position of the prime minister of India for a longer period after her father, Jawaharlal Nehru.
She had contributed a lot in taking India to great heights. One of her famous slogans “Garibi Hatao Desh Bachao” is still remembered by the people of the country. Indira Gandhi helped East Pakistan, which is now Bangladesh, a lot when it was fighting for independence in 1971. She was honored with the Bharat Ratna in 1972 and the Mexican Academy Award for Liberation of Bangladesh in 1972, and many more. However, in 1971, she was regarded as the most admired individual on the planet.
How could we forget the year 1975? It was a year when Indira Gandhi put India in a state of emergency by putting her political opponents in jail. During that time period, she also put into effect several controversial policies. One of which was the widespread use of sterilization as a method of birth control. She also nationalized the banks by abolishing privy purses. However, this also resulted in her loss in the upcoming elections but she again came to power in 1980. Under her second term, she faced many difficulties like the Khalistan issue but she was a fighter. She fought every situation with endurance. She ordered troops to free the Golden Temple from terrorists. Unfortunately, about 450 Sikhs were killed in this mission.
In response to the violence in Amritsar, two of Gandhi’s own Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh took their revenge. Just five months later Indira Gandhi was killed in the garden of her home in New Delhi. Smt. Indira Gandhi was involved with a significant number of organizations and establishments throughout her life. She was quite successful and has a long list of achievements to her name. Even when she is not between us, she is an inspiration for many of us. Indira Gandhi will always be remembered as the strongest women leader in India’s history.
