You can switch on or off your air conditioner before reaching home, by using your phone.

The most primitive form of a wheel made by cutting a circular log of wood is also a technology. While a million-dollar worth jet engine which provides the necessary lift to the jetliner is also an example of technology and a pretty advanced one at that.

Technology is everywhere, in our houses, our offices, you might ignore it as a part of the daily ritual but today’s modern life is inseparable with technology. The bus that drives you to school is technology; the mike that the principal uses in the morning assembly is a technology and the guitar you play in music class is also a technology.

The term ‘technology’ is used to define innovation that has been devised using principles of various branches of science. In more simple terms, when scientific logic is applied to materials, thereby producing equipment that makes a particular job/work easy and convenient in some way or the other.

For example, an ax with a wooden shaft used to cut branches, is also a product of technology, though, a very basic one. It uses materials like wood and iron/steel and scientific principles of lever and force to split wood. If we just observe, we would find hundreds of such basic products of technology that we use every day.

Knife, nail, hammer, etc are the products of technology and also a kind of technology in their own way. Man’s relationship with technology isn’t new and it has been going on since the advent of civilization. Primitive cave men, those lived millions of year ago, had innovated simple tools like a spear, wheel, bow-arrow, etc for hunting and other purposes.

Today, that basic technology has gone through ages of observation and technical developments, to give birth to a whole new technological evolution. Automobiles, machinery, and household equipment are some examples of advancements made in the field of technology.

Though the man had been playing with science since ages, the term ‘technology’ was conceived in the early 20th century. It is inspired by the German terms “Technik” and “technologie”. Though, in German, there is a difference between ‘technik’ and ‘technologie’ the English, around the 1930s, combined both and start referring to them as “technology”.

An American sociologist Read Bain gave the first definition of technology in 1937 in his journal titled “Technology and State Government”. Bain wrote that all the tools, machinery, equipment, clothes, etc are technology along with the methods we use to produce them.

From time to time ‘technology’ had been defined by several scientists and engineers; nevertheless, the basic concept has always remained the same. It is a concept created by combining mental and physical effort to obtain a valuable outcome.

Technology has made life easy and convenient. Before modern-day technology, carrying out everyday works was so cumbersome and difficult. It would take a whole day to just travel a couple of miles. Sending messages also wasn’t as easy as it is today. With a mobile phone which is a technological product, you can send messages instantly to the receiver on another corner of the world.

A couple of centuries back, it would have taken a couple of days or even weeks. Technology has much evolved making life more easy, convenient and safe than before. Though technology is advantageous, there are also certain disadvantages attributed to it. Today, we depend on technology, so much that it would be impossible to live for a single day in absence of it.
