Interjections of Greeting

Definition and Examples

Interjections of greeting are use to greet a person or express the sense of concern for him. For Example- Hello, hi, hey, ahoy, goodbye etc.

Examples of Interjections of Greeting

  • Hello! Is anybody listening?
  • Hi! Where have you been for so long?
  • Hey! Where have you been?

Should be noted that when the interjections are followed by an exclamation mark, they indicate strong greeting i.e. strong emotion with raised voice, when followed by a comma it indicate a mild expression. Moreover, informally the Interjections may also be used to indicate a very strong greeting like- Hellooooo! Hiiiiiiii! Heeeeey!, Whazzup!, Good Morning, Good Evening etc. Except from the mentioned commonly used Interjections of Greetings there are few more interjections which are not widely accepted- ahoy, aloha, howdy etc.

  • Ahoy’ originated as a nautical slang and was used to call upon a ship or floating vessel but was also used for greeting after the invention of telephones.
  • Aloha’ is a Hawaiian word and can be used for greeting as well as farewell.
  • Howdy’ is a slang word roughly meaning- ‘How do you do’.
