History
Engineers Day or National Engineers Day is a very historical event related to a famous personality from the history of India. It is the day when Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was born on the 15th of September 1860 in Karnataka. He was working in the Public Works Department of Bombay as an Assistant Engineer. Later, he was appointed in Nasik and other important places in India.
Because of his skill and dedication in the field, he received many awards from the Government of India, including the highest Indian civilian award Bharat Ratna. He is considered among the earliest, diligent, and skilled engineers of India. This is why his birth anniversary is celebrated annually as National Engineers Day in India.
The first celebration of Engineers Day of India was made in the year 1968, and it was decided to celebrate every year with a different and specific theme chosen by the council of Institutions.

A Short Biography of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya
Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya is known as an Indian engineer who had also worked as a statesman. He had born on 15 September 1960 in Muddenahalli village of Karnataka. He completed his education from Central College in Bangalore and earned the degree of engineering from the College of Engineering in Pune. He had also been in the University of Bombay.
He started his career as an Assistant Engineer at the age of 25, serving in Nasik, Pune and many other places. Later, he became the Assistant Superintending Engineer in 1897 and visited several foreign lands. The best years of his service were from 1912 to 1918 during which he was the Diwan of Mysore. Because of his works in transforming Karnataka into a model state, he was known as the ‘Father of the Modern Mysore’.
During the construction of Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, he was the chief engineer of the project and constructed it as the biggest dam of Asia at that time. The invention of the block system, floodgates, and automated doors were some of his prominent works for which he would be remembered forever.
He worked with the ‘Order of the Indian Empire’ in the year 1911. The Government Engineering College of Bangalore was established by him in the year 1917. From 1927 to 1955, he was in the Board of Directors of TATA Steels. Because of his contributions in the development of India, the Government of India awarded him with the highest Indian civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1955.
On 14 April 1962, the great India engineer died in his home state Karnataka when he was around 102 years old. In his honour, there are many Indian institutes and monuments are named after him like Metro Stations, Engineering Institutes and Museum, etc.
