Paragraph 1 – 100 Words

Dussehra also is known as Vijayadashami is one of the biggest festivals of Hindus in India. Some other countries like Sri Lanka, Mauritius, and Malaysia also celebrate it but have their own reasons behind it. As per the Hindu calendar, we celebrate it on the 10th day of Ashwin month in the Shukla paksha. While talking about an English Calendar, every year we celebrate this occasion between September and October.

As per the Indian mythology, the annihilation of demon ‘Mahishasur’ by Goddess Durga is celebrated as Vijayadashmi; whereas it is the same day when Lord Rama too killed Ravana. Overall, it is a celebration of victory over evil. Every year we celebrate this occasion with great enthusiasm.

When we talk about festivals in India, then some famous festivals grab our attention first. As a student I love Dussehra and I have my own reasons behind it. Actually, it is not a one-day festival it begins with Navratri and Ashtami, Navami, and then Vijayadashami the 10th day of Navaratri, it is also known as Dussehra. The above mentioned 3 days are important and we get holidays for some continuous days. It is something like we have a row of festivals together following one another.

Dussehra is the day when several people worship Lord Rama, Goddess Durga, and other Hindu deities. In the southern part of India Vijayadashami is celebrated by performing prayers and other rituals for Goddess Durga and Chamundeshwari Devi.

In the Northern part of India, Dussehra is celebrated for the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. In the eastern part of India, Dussehra is celebrated in respect of Goddess Durga it is popularly known as the ‘Bijoy Dashmi’. The occasion is celebrated in different ways in the entire nation.

Dussehra is a festival of victory of God over demons either it was Goddess Durga or Lord Ram. All of them played their part to demolish demons from our planet.

It was lord Rama who went on exile with her wife and younger brother but in between the demon, Ravana kidnapped his wife. Ravana got a boon from Lord Shiva of having 10 heads and was also immortal. All these things filled ego and pride in him. As a result, he was killed and we celebrate this occasion as Dussehra. Then 10 heads of Ravana represent different sins like anger, jealousy, selfishness, injustice, greed, pride, arrogance, lust, cruelty, greed.

Apart from this, Goddess Durga also killed Mahishasura so we celebrate the same day as Vijayadashami. It is a festival of celebrating victory. All Indian festivals are special and some are famous for the victory whereas some for colour. Every year we celebrate and remember these good thoughts and try our best to follow them in our lives and this is the true meaning of a festival.

Dussehra as a word is made up of two Sanskrit words i.e. Dasha (ten) and Hara (to defeat). Here Dasha refers to the demon king Ravana, it’s said that he had ten heads and lord Rama defeat him. This special day also has many other historic beliefs but all of them aim the same. We celebrate the victory of good over evil on this day.

Buddhists celebrate this occasion as Ashok Vijayadashami because on this day Emperor Ashoka changed his religion and converted into Buddhism. Following the tradition, Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar also changed his religion and turned into a Buddhist on this day. So, in this way, this day holds a special place for Buddhist people.

In the Western part of India that is Gujarat people celebrate it in a different way. Starting from the Navaratri different Dandiya events are organized and people take part in them and show their gratitude to Goddess Durga. They perform a dance in front of the Goddess idol and on the last day they celebrate it by her victory over demons.

According to Hindu Almanac, Dussehra falls twenty days before Diwali. In West Bengal, the grand celebration of Dussehra is called ‘Bijoy Dashmi’, it is celebrated on the tenth day of Navratri. Various edibles and symbolic sweets are prepared on the occasion of Dussehra. We can say that the entire nation celebrates this day and enjoy in their own way.
