Interjections of Understanding/Misunderstanding

Definition and Examples

Interjections of understanding and misunderstanding are used to express ones understanding of a subject being talked about or something which wasn’t well understood before the moment. Like- Aha! So you let the dogs out! With the use of Interjection ‘Aha!’ the speaker indicates that before the moment he had no idea as to who had let the dogs out and he rather came to know about it right now and expressed his understanding using the Interjection ‘Aha!’

‘Eh?’ on the other hand is an Interjection of misunderstanding i.e. The speaker expresses his/her disbelief by using ‘Eh?’.  Sometimes it might be used in a way to taunt someone over an action or claim. For E.g.- Eh? You are good at base ball! We will further clearly understand these Interjections in the following examples and exercises.

  • Aha! So it was you!
  • Ahh! I got it!
  • Eh? I didn’t get it!
  • Oh! So this way it is supposed to be done!

Aha! Expresses a victorious understanding of anything. It is similar to the Ahh! And oh!

Eh? On the other hand expresses a misunderstanding.
