Sadbhavana in Hindi is used to express the feeling of goodwill and harmony among a group of people. In Hindi “Sad” means good and “Bhavana” is the feeling that one has for others. Sadbhavana in Hindi therefore refers to the goodwill or harmony between two people or between groups of people. Sadbhawna Diwas is a very important day for every Indian. Introduction

India celebrates Sadbhavana Divas or the Indian harmony Day on August 20 each year; to mark the Birth Anniversary of India’s sixth Prime Minister (1984-1989) Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, who also holds the record of being the youngest Prime Minister at 40. Sadbhavana in Hindi means good will or a feeling of wellness for each other.

Therefore, when referred in context of India Sadbhavana indicates communal harmony and peace among its people. The day is celebrated as “Sadbhavana Divas” to commemorate the Birth day of Rajiv Gandhi, as well as to honour his efforts to propagate communal harmony and National integration. He was also known as the goodwill Ambassador to the World for his efforts to restore peace in some of the foreign countries.

About Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20 1944 to Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi. He was the grandson of Inependent India’s first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and the son of 3rd Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi (in office from 14th January 1980- 31st October 1984).

His Political carrier

After the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31st October 1981 Rajiv Gandhi was persuaded by the then President of India, Zail Singh to succeed his mother as the Prime Minister of India within hours of her assassination. In the ensuing elections Congress party won with a clean majority and Rajiv Gandhi became the 6th Prime Minister of India.

  • Mission “Operation flowers are blooming”. In 1986 Rajiv Gandhi on the request of President of Seychelles – France Albert Rene, sent Indian Navy to Seychelles to oppose an attempted coup against Rene. The mission was successful and the coupe was averted.
  • 1988 Maldives coup. In 1988 President of Maldives, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom requested India for troops to avert a possible coup by seperatists groups. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi dispatched 1500 soldiers and the coup was suppressed.
  • No nuclear weapons. Rajiv Gandhi was vocal in professing the idea of a World free form Nuclear Weapons. Which he expressed in the 15th session of United Nation General Assembly on 9th June 1988.
  • Relations with Pakistan. Rajiv Gandhi also played a vital role in the establishment of peace between India and Pakistan by honouring the 1972 Shimla agreement.
  • Sri Lankan Civil War. Rajiv Gandhi sent IPKF (Indian Peace keeping forces) to Sri Lanka in 1989 to fight against civilian atrocities by LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil elum) and to restore peace in Sri Lanka.
  • Released the Leaders of Akali Dal, who had been imprisoned since operation Blue Star in 1984.
  • Insurgency in North East India. Rajiv Gandhi curbed insurgency in North East India by giving the Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh the status of States that were earlier Union Territories.

Sadbhavana Divas Celebrations

Sadbhavana Divas is celebrated by all political parties paying their homage to Rajiv Gandhi by garlanding his statues and laying flowers on them. The day is a big event for the Indian National Congress, the political party of which Rajiv Gandhi was President. Big event is organized on the day by Congress, at Veer Bhoomi, Delhi, where Rajiv Gandhi was cremated.

Members of his family including his wife Sonia Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Gandhi, son Rahul Gandhi, all the leaders of Congress party including its President, as well as many political leaders across the party lines gather at veer bhoomi to pay their respect to him and remember his efforts in restoring national and international peace and towards the promotion of communal harmony and integration. Many cultural events and speeches are organized in schools narrating his vision of a successful India which goes through peace and communal harmony among its citizens.

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award

Rajiv Gandhi National Sadhavana award (Rajiv Gandhi National Communal Harmony award) is an award given for outstanding contribution in the development of peace and communal harmony in India and carries a citation and cash reward of Rupees Ten Lakhs.

The award is constituted by All India Congress Committee (AICC) of Indian National Congress (INC) in 1992 to commemorate the contribution of Rajiv Gandhi in promoting National and International peace and harmony.  Mother Teresa, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Mohammed Yunus of Bangladesh and former Assam Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia, are few of the recipients of the prestigious award.

Significance of Sadbhavana Divas

Sadbhavana Divas holds much value for India and its people, because it reminds them that their existence is only possible if they live in communal harmony and at peace with each other. It reminds us of the theory of Rajiv Gandhi professing world peace through communal harmony and a nuclear power free world.

It is a day when people and political parties shun their differences and take oath for promoting communal harmony, integration and Nationalism. The day is important because it also felicitates those who have made exceptional contribution towards promoting harmony and peace.
