Yamuna River is one of the major rivers of India. It is the fifth-longest river of India and the second largest tributary of River Ganga. It originates from Bandar Pooch glacier located in Uttarakhand. Yamuna is the lifeline of the capital of India, New Delhi and it also flows from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh where it meets with Ganges at Allahabad.

Yamuna has equal religious importance as Ganga and the holy cities like Mathura and Allahabad are situated on the river banks of it. When Yamuna joins Ganga at Allahabad or Prayagraj, the place is called Sangam and Kumbh mela is organized with much zeal and zest every 12 years.

8) After crossing Haryana, Yamuna River enters Uttar Pradesh and flows from Agra, Mathura and reaches Allahabad where it merges with River Ganga.

9) In Allahabad, the confluence of Yamuna and Ganga is known as ‘Sangam’ and the famous ‘Kumbh Mela’ is organized every 12 years at location.

10) In the early 90s, Government of India with financial assistance from Japan started Yamuna action plan to clean Yamuna.


Apart from physical and geographical importance, Yamuna River has religious importance in Hinduism. It is said that Lord Krishna was born in Mathura which is situated on the banks of Yamuna River. There is a number of pilgrimages and temples which are located on the banks of Yamuna. Sangam at Allahabad becomes so auspicious, a place that every 12 years ‘Kumbh Mela’ is organised at the location. The famous Taj Mahal is also located on the banks of River Yamuna.
