Kiran Bedi is a renowned personality and she is especially famous as the first female IPS (Indian Police Service) officer. She had served the nation effectively for almost 35 years and took voluntary retirement in 2007. 1) Kiran Bedi is the first woman officer in the country to join the Indian Police Service (IPS).

2) Her first posting was in 1975 in Chanakyapuri Subdivision, Delhi.

3) Kiran Bedi has held the post of Director General in the Indian Bureau of Research and Development of Police Department.

4) She was also the Police Advisor of the ‘Peace Keeping’ Department of the United Nations.

5) She also made several reforms in Tihar Jail, where she was awarded the Raman Magsaysay Award in 1994 for her efforts.

6) In 1972, she won the women’s tennis championship of Asia.

7) The manner in which she controlled the Sikh uprising that erupted between the Akalis and the Nirankaris at India Gate Delhi in 1977 is an example in the police department’s record.

8) She continued her campaign against drug abuse, which was later founded at Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation in 2007.

9) She became the first woman to lead a male troop in the Republic Day parade.

1) Dr. Kiran Bedi is a retired Indian Police Service officer, social worker, former tennis player and politician.

2) Currently she is the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.

3) She was the first woman officer to join the Indian Police Service in 1972.

4) She took voluntary retirement in 2008 after serving for 35 years.

5) She has served as Joint Commissioner of Police Training and Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Intelligence).

10) She was also associated with Anna Hazare’s movement in 2011 and has also been one of the prominent members of India against Corruption campaign.


Kiran Bedi has been an effective IPS Officer and is now serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu appointed on 29th May 2016. She has always stepped forward to fight against corruption and remove it from India. In October 2010, she joined Arvind Kejriwal to expose CWG (Common Wealth Games) Scam and people associated in it.
