Elephant is the very big mammal animal on the earth. It has a strange body structure. It is found in grey color. It looks clumsy but children and kids like it very much. Appearance of Elephant:

Elephant is very clumsy, funny, and huge body animal which grows a height of about 10 feet. Its skin is too hard and rough. Its physical appearance totally differs from the other animals. Types of Elephant:

There are two types of elephants which found in two regions, Asia and Africa. The scientific name of the Asian Elephant is ‘Elephas Maximus’ and African Elephant’s is ‘Loxodonta’. African elephants are differ from Asian elephants in various ways such as; it is bigger than the Indian elephants, both males and females have tusks, etc.

Elephant’s Relation with Water:

Elephants have close relation with water. Not only it drinks water but also it likes to play and swim in it. It uses trunk to draw and drink water. At a time, an elephant can hold around four liter water in its trunk. During the summer, elephants spent too much time in the water. It throws water over the body to keep body cool.

Elephant is a clumsy, grey colored, and huge body animal. It is a four-footed mammal which has two large ears like fan, two small eyes, two ivory tusks (the biggest form of canine), a sloped head, a mouth, a long nose known as trunk which is merged with the upper lip of his mouth, a short tail with a tuft of hair at the tip and a big back as well as the big stomach. Its physical appearance makes it differ from the other land animal. Basically, it is a wild animal but after its training it is used as a domestic animal. Species of Elephant:

The two species of elephant are:

  • African Elephant:

African elephant is the largest species of elephant which is huge and biggest land animal. Its body growth is continuing for up to 30 years. The male African elephant may reach the height of around 8.2-13 feet (2.5-4 meters) from shoulder to toe and its weight between 9000-13000 pounds (4500-7000 kg). The female African elephants have not much difference as they reach the height of around 7-9 feet (2.2-3 meter) from shoulder to toe and her weight between 4500-7000 pounds. The male and female African elephant both have tusks. In Africa, it is found in sub-Saharan, rain forests of central and west and Sahel desert in Mali.

  • Asian Elephant:

Asian elephants differ from African elephants in several ways. Its scientific name is Elephas Maximus and it is smaller than African elephants. It grows up to 6.6-9.8 feet (2-3m) from shoulder to toe and it weighs between 2.25-5.5 tones (2041-4990 kg). The female Asian elephants have no tusks, only male elephants have tusks. In Asian continent, it is mostly found in Nepal, India and Southeast Asia in scrubs forests as well as rain forests. There are three sub-species found in India:

  • Elephas Maximus Indicus:

The species which is found in the India, China and Vietnam is known as Elephas Maximus Indicus. Its height is around 2-3 meter. Its skin color is lighter than of Maximus.

  • Elephas Maximus Maximus:

This species of elephant is found mostly in Sri Lanka. It is the biggest species of Asian elephants. However, Sri Lankan elephant has less predisposed to growing tusks. It has darker color than Indicus elephants.

  • Elephas Maximus Sumantranus:

This sub-species is found in Indonesia also known as Sumatran elephant discovered in 2005.

Difference between African and Asian Elephants:

Following are differences between African and Asian Elephants:

  • African elephants are bigger than Asian elephants.
  • All African elephants have tusks while only male Asian elephants have tusks, 50% of female Asian elephants have short tusks which are called as tushes.
  • Adult African elephants weigh around 4,000-7,500 kg. In the other hand, Asian male elephants weigh around 3000-6000 kg.
  • It is said that African elephants’ ears are like a map of Africa and Asian elephants’ ears smaller like the shape of India.
  • African elephants’ skin is more wrinkled than Asian elephants.
  • African elephants have more ribs (21 pair) while Asian elephant have 20 pairs.

Habits, Behavior and Uses of Elephants:

Though, elephant is a wild animal but after training, it can be used for various purposes. So, it can be said that elephant is a social animal. Some basic facts about the elephant’s habits, behavior and uses are:

  • It has the best smell sense of all animals.
  • It shows social interaction by its trunk.
  • Its trunk is a fusion of its’ upper lip and the nose.
